UTR-P Ratings Update - April 2025

Q: Why did we make this Rating Update?

A: April 14th, 2025, we made an update to the UTR-P Rating to help align the pickleball community across rating systems. The UTR-P rating scale is larger and therefore presents the one decimal pickleball rating (example 3.5, 4.0, etc.) higher than other ratings systems, leading to confusion during registration. Listening to player feedback received, we collaborated with our key partners, USA Pickleball and the Association of Pickleball Players (APP), to arrive at the collective decision to adjust every player’s rating by 0.5 points so that you feel more confident that your rating reflects your skill level. This change will simplify registration and division selection and provide the best possible experience for players. We continue to have the most accurate and reliable rating that keeps competition fair while reflecting your current skill level.

Q: What updates were made to the UTR-P rating?

A: All UTR-P ratings were adjusted down by 0.5 points. Example: If I was a 4.7, I became a 4.2 after the update.

Q: How did this update impact the accuracy of the UTR-P rating and who was impacted?

A: There was no impact on accuracy, reliability, or overall rating healthSince every pickleball player received the same adjustment, the relative difference between players remained unchanged.

Example: Jerry was a 4.8, Tommy was a 4.7. After the update, Jerry became a 4.3, Tommy became a 4.2. Jerry still remained 0.1 points ahead.)

As always, the UTR-P rating only incorporates verified match data, ensuring it can not be manipulated.

Q: The email I received about the change said I had no partner for an upcoming event, but I have one.

A: Our initial email regarding the rating had an error that listed everyone as unpartnered, even if they already had a partner. We did not make any partner changes, but you can verify searching for the event at app.utrsports.net and finding yourself in the registration list. If you'd like to make changes to your registration, you can do so yourself following the steps here: Selecting and Changing Doubles Partners
