How to Set Up a Team Tennis Tournament

Are you looking to run a team tennis tournament but don’t have the time for a full regular season? Our software provides an option for organizing a Team Tournament, which can be completed in one or two weekends—perfect for groups with limited availability or when a full-length season isn't feasible. This article will walk you through the process of setting up a Team Tournament and the options you have as a Tournament Team Manager (TTM).

Why Choose a Team Tournament?

Team Tournaments are ideal when:

  • You’re short on time and cannot commit to a full season.
  • Participants have limited availability.
  • You want to offer a compact and exciting competition format, such as for a holiday weekend event.
  • You're testing the waters in a new market and want to gauge interest with a shorter commitment.

Steps to Set Up a Team Tournament

1. Select the "Team Tournament" Session Type

When setting up a new season, select "Team Tournament" from the Session Type dropdown menu. This setting allows you to schedule the tournament over one or two weekends rather than stretching it out over several weeks.

2. Enter the Location

Since a tournament involves multiple matches over a short period, securing enough courts is crucial. In the Location field, make sure to provide the venue details. It’s essential to confirm your court availability ahead of time.

3. Choose the Draw Type

You can choose between two draw formats:

  • First Match Backdraw: This format ensures that teams losing their first match still get to play additional matches in a backdraw.
  • Single Elimination: In this format, a team is eliminated after their first loss, streamlining the tournament to its core matches.

Select your preferred format based on how much court time you have and whether you want to give teams more than one opportunity to play.

4. Set the Team Match Format

Next, you will decide how the team match structure looks. You can choose from the following:

  • Singles matches only.
  • Doubles matches only.
  • Both singles and doubles.

Once selected, you’ll need to configure the number of singles and/or doubles matches per team and the scoring format (e.g., best-of-3 sets, 2 set w/ match tiebreaker, single set, time based, and fast 4.).

5. Team Registration and Bracket Size

In the Team Registration section, you can:

  • Set the deadline for teams to sign up.
  • Determine the size of the bracket, allowing anywhere from 4 to 16 teams to participate.

Make sure to leave enough time for teams to gather players and register, especially if you’re operating in a short timeframe.

6. Finalize and Run Your Tournament

Once all the settings are configured, review your tournament details and publish it. Be sure to communicate with your teams and captains, confirming match times, locations, and draw structures.

Summary of Steps:

  1. Select Team Tournament as the session type.
  2. Enter the tournament location (with secured courts).
  3. Choose the draw type: First Match Backdraw or Single Elimination.
  4. Set the Team Match Format (singles, doubles, or both).
  5. Set registration deadlines and bracket size (4 to 16 teams).

With these simple steps, you can quickly set up a successful and exciting Team Tennis Tournament, giving players a fun and competitive experience in a shorter timeframe.
